What are chakras and where do they come from?
Chakras are subtle energy centers located along the central axis of the body, from the perineum to the top of the head. They are part of a system that describes how consciousness, emotions and the physical body influence one another.
The concept has roots in the Vedas, the foundational texts of Indian spirituality, produced approximately between 1500 and 500 BCE. The idea of prana, the vital energy that moves through the body through channels called nadis, was already present there. But it was within the tantric tradition, between the 5th and 12th centuries, that the chakra system was described in a more structured way.
One of the most detailed texts on the subject is the Sat-Cakra-Nirupana, from the 16th century, which describes six main centers along the spine, plus a higher center, Sahasrara. In the original texts, each chakra had its own symbolism: geometric shapes, mantras, associated deities and elements of nature.
Chakras begin with the body. This distinction - sky versus body, planets versus energy centers, astronomical cosmology versus subtle anatomy - is the foundation of everything that differentiates the two systems.

Can I study chakras and Astrology at the same time?
Yes, as long as there is clarity about what each one is. Many practitioners work with chakras and Astrology in parallel, using each system to illuminate different dimensions of experience. This works because the two systems are complementary without overlapping: one begins with the body, the other with the sky.
The problem arises when the instruments are mixed, such as when Astrology is used to "explain" chakras or when chakras are reduced to an appendix of Astrology. Each system loses depth when treated as an extension of the other.
