Signs, Birth Chart, transits, horoscope... Anyone who starts studying astrology comes across many terms and tools that help us on this evolutionary journey. The thing is, this is a very broad field of study, and we need to understand all its nuances in order to use it in the best possible way.
Going beyond its predictive nature, astrology is a study that promotes self-knowledge. It was born through the observation of the movement of the celestial bodies in the sky and the relationship this has with the dynamics that take place here on Earth. To embark on this knowledge is to understand that we are part of a whole and, therefore, are governed by the same universal laws.
"As above, so below."
According to the principle of Correspondence, there are patterns on all the planes we move through and, through the study of the cosmos, we can understand the tendencies present at a given moment, because there is a relationship between one thing and another. In other words, we analyze the events that occur in the sky and those that happen here on Earth, creating a correlation between them.
In this way, we observe the planets as a kind of clock hand, since they indicate the tendencies involved at that moment according to their energy and according to the sign and astrological house area in which they are located.
Knowing this, we also understand that no fact, event, birth or contact is accidental or in vain, but rather part of a universal mechanism that moves us forward on the evolutionary journey, interconnecting each event and involving us in the mechanism that moves the whole. The Birth Chart and the Horoscope are guides on this path, joining the environment we live in, the experiences we go through and our own degree of maturity.
Signs and Houses in Astrology
To understand how the Birth Chart and the Horoscope work, we need to understand, in fact, what signs and astrological houses are. However, it is worth noting that the principles discussed here belong to traditional astrology, which may vary according to the school of study you follow, such as Vedic astrology, for example.
Signs are imaginary bands drawn around the Earth, just like the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn that we study in geography. When the ancients observed that the movement of the celestial bodies across the globe indicated different behaviors and events, they divided the planet into 12 exactly equal bands and named each one based on the constellations. These dividing lines do not change or move, and remain the same to this day, even though those stars have moved and changed position. For this reason, the idea that the signs have changed due to celestial movement is extremely flawed.
The Astrological Houses also correspond to 12 divisions in the sky, but unlike the signs, they can change position and vary in size, since they are defined according to time and place, considering latitude and longitude. They symbolize the different areas of life, such as Love, ego, family, social relationships, finances, work, status, etc.
Transits, Birth Chart and Horoscope
As it makes its translational and rotational movements, the Earth travels through the solar system, encountering the other celestial bodies in different positions. These bodies, in turn, "illuminate" the bands that correspond to the signs at that moment and place, indicating different tendencies.
For example, let us suppose that Venus is in Libra at this moment. This means that the planet of love is positioned in such a way that it illuminates the imaginary band that corresponds to this sign here on Earth. This is what we call an astrological transit. Knowing this, we identify the tendencies arising from this movement, which, in this case, are: the search for harmony, companionship, heightened love and passion, sociability, among others.
The Birth Chart is a snapshot of the sky in relation to the Earth at the moment a person is born. In this image, we can observe all the transits that were occurring at that second and the position of the Houses in that place. Through it, we can observe all the potentials and limitations that this being may face throughout life. It is a fixed tool, meaning it does not change and is unique to each individual.
The Horoscope analyzes all planetary transits, pointing out the energies involved at that moment and possible paths and challenges to follow. By combining this with the Birth Chart, which is a personal tool, we can observe what the sky at that instant indicates for our life.
In short, the Birth Chart points to everything you can do and the challenges you may encounter along the way, while the Horoscope takes on the role of a “guide”, indicating more suitable moments to take a certain action or hold back, as well as showing what you can expect if you continue moving in a given direction.
