What Are Decans in the Birth Chart?

A person's natal signs reflect the influence of planetary positions at the moment of birth. The decan is one of the channels through which each planet expresses its energy. Despite its importance, this factor remains underexplored by most people — including many who already follow astrology.

How the Zodiac Is Divided into Decans

To understand what a decan is, start with the circle of the zodiac. It is divided into 12 sections of approximately 30° each, one for each sign. No sign measures exactly 30°, but that conventional rounding has been in use since antiquity.

As the Sun completes a full cycle through the zodiacal band, it passes through all twelve signs over the course of a year. The exact date it enters each sign can vary depending on the Sun's speed, the degree at which each sign begins, and the year itself — particularly in leap years.

• Aries: 1° to 29.59°
• Taurus: 30° to 59.59°
• Gemini: 60° to 89.59°

Beyond the 12 signs, the zodiac can also be divided into four sections for the elements: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. It can also be divided into three for the qualities: Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable.

The 30° of each sign can be further divided into three parts of 10° each. These parts are called decans, from the Greek prefix “deca,” meaning 10. Since each sign lasts approximately 30 days, each decan lasts roughly 10 days.

How to Read Your Decan in a Birth Chart

To work with the Chaldean system, it helps to understand one interpretive rule. When a decan is assigned both a planet and an element — as with the first decan of Virgo, Mercury/Earth — it means astrologers have not yet identified a more specific planet to co-rule that decan.

It is also possible for a single decan to be harmonically co-ruled by two planets. In birth chart interpretation, the modern co-ruler should be analyzed only through its house position — not its sign. These outer planets are generational: their sign placement describes a whole generation, not an individual.

The decan is one of the astrological tools used to understand the influence of planetary positions at birth, alongside the Rising Sign and the Moon. Astrology is a complex discipline, and many factors must be read together to arrive at a complete interpretation of a birth chart.
