It's a misconception to think that emotional maturity comes with old age. In a broader sense, it's related to the experiences and lessons we accumulate.

Emotional maturity is the ability to bring awareness to the realm of emotions, that is, it's one of the stages of self-knowledge.

It means knowing how to handle, understand, and face life's difficulties emotionally, as well as having the capacity to tolerate everyday frustrations.

A mature person is someone who, when faced with a problem, can deal with it calmly, seeking to make the most of any experience in order to grow.

But we don't learn anything about this at school, do we?

So, here are 5 tips to help you raise your level of emotional awareness and achieve balance and maturity.

Be free from others' opinions

You've probably heard that one of the greatest prisons we can place ourselves in is trying to please people all the time.

Being mature is understanding that this is not sustainable because, at some point, you stop being true to your own essence, compromising your fulfillment and sacrificing your happiness.

If something doesn't satisfy you, be it your job, a behavior, a city, a relationship, or an attitude, there's no need to postpone. Be authentic and transparent, even if you suppose it might displease someone.

Understand cycles of beginnings and endings

When it comes to letting go and living a happier life, most of us feel fear.

Thinking that the past was better is very painful and stops us from moving forward. Hold onto the idea of love, which is much greater than pain, illness, and the hard moments.

So let go of what no longer belongs to you: being stuck in the past stops us from closing cycles and healing emotional wounds. Cycles of birth and death are inherent and inevitable.

Within tears, there is always the possibility of being happy again!

Tip: How about doing a farewell ritual?

If something still takes you back to the past and brings suffering, perform a ritual or symbolic act to help you overcome your loss.

How?

Set aside items or objects that remind you of someone or something you need to say goodbye to. If necessary, you can write a letter.

Create a song or a farewell prayer with all your respect and sincerity from the heart.

Let your tears fall as much as you need.

Talk to that person or reflect on the situation you need to release. Speak about how you feel.

Sing a song, bury or burn the chosen object or letter with care. Offer your pain to the earth and the possibility of a new beginning to the fire.

Savor the feeling of freeing your heart from pain.

Allow yourself to embrace the new and celebrate life as you start over!

More action, less complaint

If there's one word that defines maturity, it is resolution. Stopping the complaints and focusing on solutions is the best way to usher in change.

In addition to solving nothing, complaints usually provoke negative emotional states, paralyzing us when we face problems.

People are used to understanding one another only when there is some emotional connection between them.

However, true empathy consists of an impartial and non-judgmental perspective.

When you reach maturity, you can put yourself in another person’s shoes, even if you don’t know them or share any affinity.

We learn from others and can also teach what we have already overcome. For example: if you’re someone who reads a lot and finds it easy to make reading a habit, you can help friends and family with practical reading tips and book suggestions to encourage them. The result is an exchange of experiences. Those who teach always have even more to learn!

No resentments

Letting go of guilt, frustration, and resentment is tough, but absolutely necessary to progress emotionally. Weeds grow quickly; if the path isn’t cleared, better opportunities won’t get a chance to flourish.

Live as much as possible in the present, overcoming and accepting what has passed. What happened is done; it can’t be changed. Learn from mistakes and move on—this is emotional maturity and balance!

The courage to be imperfect

Don’t wear the Superman or Superwoman cape. Vulnerability is like an ID—everyone has one!

One of the most evident traits in mature people is learning from mistakes and failures. When we become flexible, we accept that we will fail and that it’s up to us to turn failures into stepping stones for growth.
